There seems to be a serious lack of communication, understanding, and diplomacy in all these situations. In the case of Iran, while the President here wants to build new nucs, he is telling these people they can't have any. Perhaps democracy would 'spread' in a more positive way if it was done by example; by leaving room for 'saving face'.
