Saddam Hussein Hangs at 6 A.M.

By Remy Benoit

From MSNBC Iraqi leaders weigh Saddam execution
Source: Ex-leader will be hanged by 6 a.m. Baghdad time.

That is less than an hour our time here.

There has been so very much death in my lifetime.
WWII had just ended when I was born. We followed with Korea, with endless 'brush fire wars,' with Mutually Assured Destruction, with Vietnam, with Desert Storm, with southeastern Europe, with Enduring Freedom, with all the horror in Africa, in Central America, in Afghanistan. I could probably type all night listing the horrors of the Cultural Revolution in China and many other places.

A ruler who takes the wrong path, who takes the path of greed, of destruction, of ego must face the responsibility of his, or her, actions. Those who served him, who followed that path with him, well, we decided at Nuremberg that 'I was just following orders' does not wash.

And so, we must ask ourselves if we are willing to follow the long tentacles of culpability - to those who served a ruler on the wrong path, to those who supplied him, to those who bolstered his rule, to those who tried to use him for their own benefit. Businessmen in Germany thought that they could control, use, Hitler. They found themselves mistaken. Some thought to appease him; they too found themselves mistaken.

Most of us sit about, follow our lives, and do not think of foreign policy that is made in our names.

Perhaps we should.

And for those experiencing PTSD from combat, and most definitely their families, I can't recommend highly enough Dr. Edward Tick's War and the Soul. This is a book that should be required reading in high schools and on everyone's personal reading list. Perhaps then our Veterans would be treated with more understanding and compassion. Perhaps then we would demand to know exactly the reasons for a given war, and demand to know that they were, indeed, righteous reasons. These are our loved ones. They have the right to expect that we know, that we demand, truth, care, and compassion.
