A major component of history is change.

As I sat and read this article Bush, Putin commemorate WWII victory. all kinds of memories went tumbling through my mind.

There was "Tailgunner Joe" leading his witch hunt McCarthysim. on the tiny black and white TV screen of my childhood.

There was a flash back to I Led Three Lives, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. ,and Get Smart.

There was Mutually Assured Destruction. and vivid memories of the debates over who would let who into personal survival bunkers and the still easily recallable scent of damp wool coats pulled over heads as we waited out the drills in school hallways huddled on the floor together.

Images of the shoe being pounded The Rise of Khrushchev., visceral memories of The 13 Days of October. when we stood by our Sophmore Lockers and wondered if we would the next next day, if we would make it to our Senior proms.

There was Korea, and Tet, Chicago, Kent State, the tumbling of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Soviet Union, and an endless stream of others.

Perhaps we are entire generation with PTSD trying to process it all.

And so they sit at a parade together these heirs of Jefferson, Franklin, Washington; of the Romanov Dynasty. of Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, of Lenin's Testament., of De-Stalinization. of Perestroika.

I recalled the version of Tolstoy's War and Peace. that I watched during the summer of '72.

Once again, we need to know our history, to mold our futures. History is evolutional; how it evolves is up to us.
